MINES AT TOP IN UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION & TUNNELING

As the only North American university with tunneling-focused departments in civil, mining and geological engineering, and with the collaborative spirit to forge a successful multidisciplinary effort in these areas, Mines is the ideal campus for an Underground Construction & Tunneling (UC&T) Center. Mines currently offers the broadest range of UC&T coursework in the world, which is supplemented with the university’s core strength in connected secondary disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, computer and geophysical engineering.

Initial support to build the center came from alumnus Bruce Grewcock ’76. “Colorado School of Mines equipped me with the technical expertise and training that our industry demands,” said Grewcock, chairman and CEO of Kiewit Corporation. “The UC&T Center at Mines will serve as a valuable training and research resource.”

Grewcock sees a clear need for strong university focus nationally in UC&T, both to prepare the engineering workforce of the future and to solve challenging problems through interdisciplinary research. Total government and industry research funding is nearly $2.6 million and will continue to grow.
